What Is Panama City Beach Known For?

Most people know it for the sand. The shore runs for 27 miles along the Emerald Coast, and the sand is bright white quartz. On calm days, the Gulf of Mexico turns a clear shade of green.

It also keeps a fun, old-school beach town feel. You get fishing piers, mini golf, seafood shacks and tall condos along one long strip. The city was incorporated in 1936, so it marked 90 years in 2026.

Don’t mix it up with nearby places, though. Panama City is a separate city across the bay. The country of Panama is far away in Central America.

Wildlife is a big part of the trip too. A large group of bottlenose dolphins lives in these waters. You can often spot them from a boat or a pier.

Getting There

You can fly right into the area or drive in on US 98. Flying saves the most time for long trips. Driving gives you a car for the whole stay.

Flying In

Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP) is your closest option. It sits north of the beach, about 20 to 40 minutes from most stays. Atlanta, Dallas and Charlotte rank among its busiest routes.

Use our flight time calculator to plan your travel day. Then check the latest airport and airline rules before you pack. Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) is a good backup if ECP fares look high.

Driving In

US 98 runs through town and connects you to the rest of the Panhandle. Our drive time calculator helps you plan stops. You can also estimate your distance with the mileage calculator.

Watch the clock when you arrive. PCB runs on Central Time, one hour behind Orlando and Miami.

Getting Around

A car makes life much easier here. Attractions and restaurants sit far apart, and the strip is long. Front Beach Road slows down in summer, so try Back Beach Road for longer trips.

No car? Uber, Lyft and taxis all work well for short rides. Check the price first with our Uber calculator or taxi fare calculator.

Bayway, the local bus system, also serves the beach area. The city’s trail network covers about 40 miles, so a bike can work too.

Best Time to Visit

April, May, September and October are your strongest picks. You get warm days without the full summer rush. Just remember that September falls in hurricane season.

SeasonAverage Gulf waterCrowdsGood to know
Spring (March to May)About 71°FHigh in March, easing by MaySpring break rules apply in March
Summer (June to August)About 84°FHighestHot, busy and usually the priciest
Fall (September to November)About 78°FModerate to lowWarm water, but storms are possible
Winter (December to February)About 63°FLowestQuiet, but too cool for most swimmers

Skip March if you want a calm trip. Spring break fills the strip, and extra rules apply. Late April and May feel far more relaxed.

Best Time to Visit panama city beach

Winter suits long walks and lower prices. Hotel rates often dip from November to January. Pack a jacket, because cold fronts can make evenings chilly.

Hurricane season runs from June through November. Check your cancellation terms before you book. Flexible rates are worth it during these months.

Love events? Gulf Coast Jam, Thunder Beach and the New Year’s Eve Beach Ball Drop all pull big crowds. Book early if your dates overlap.

Best Beaches and Natural Spots

Good news: every beach in Bay County is public. There are 96 public access points between Thomas Drive and the west end of Front Beach Road. So you can always find a patch of sand.

St. Andrews State Park

This is the top pick for nature lovers. The 1,260-acre park has about 1.5 miles of beach, nature trails and fishing piers. Entry costs $8 per vehicle for two to eight people.

St. Andrews State Park

The gates open at 8 a.m. every day and close at sundown. Get there early on summer weekends. You can also book a campsite or a water-view glamping tent.

Shell Island

Shell Island is an undeveloped barrier island about seven miles long. You can only reach it by boat. The official ferry leaves from inside St. Andrews State Park and takes about 15 minutes each way.

Recent ferry tickets cost around $23 per person. Boarding times change by season, so check before you go. Book ahead during busy months.

Bring everything you need for the day. The island has no restrooms, shade structures or trash cans. Pack water, food, a hat and a bag for your trash.

Snorkeling Near the Jetties

The rock jetties at St. Andrews are the easiest place to start. Look for rays, fish, sponges and coral. The calm, shallow pool behind the jetties works well for kids.

Shell Island is another strong spot, and a shuttle gets you there. Rent gear at the park concession or book a boat tour that includes it. Calm days give you the clearest water.

Camp Helen State Park and Rick Seltzer Park

Camp Helen sits at the far west edge of the area. It’s a quiet place for a nature walk. It feels very different from the busy central strip.

Rick Seltzer Park is a simple stop for a beach picnic. It has shaded tables and a dune boardwalk that leads to the sand.

Russell-Fields Pier and M.B. Miller County Pier

Russell-Fields City Pier sits across from Pier Park. M.B. Miller County Pier is farther east, near Shipwreck Island. Both are great for sunset walks and dolphin spotting.

Go about an hour before sunset for the best light. You only need a fishing pass if you plan to cast a line.

Top Activities for Every Traveler

There’s far more here than sand. Your group’s ages and energy will shape your days. Start with the list that fits you best.

On the Water

Dolphin tours are the easy favorite. Most boats explore Shell Island and St. Andrews Bay in two to three hours. Many tours include a stop to swim with a mask and fins.

Want more speed? Try parasailing, or rent a pontoon boat for the day. Anglers can book a deep sea charter, and certified divers can visit nearby wrecks.

For Families

Shipwreck Island Waterpark is the big summer pick, with slides and a lazy river. ZooWorld offers animal encounters on shaded paths. Goofy Golf is a retro mini golf classic with giant statues.

Coconut Creek adds more mini golf and a huge maze. Traveling with a little one? Our baby travel essentials list makes packing much easier.

Rainy Day Options

WonderWorks is the famous upside-down building, packed with hands-on science exhibits. Ripley’s Believe It or Not has a mirror maze and a moving theater. The Man in the Sea Museum covers the history of diving.

Pier Park and Nightlife

Pier Park is the main hub for shopping, food and evening fun. Ride the SkyWheel for wide views, then walk over to the pier. Aaron Bessant Park next door hosts concerts and festivals.

The area has added some big names lately. Topgolf opened in 2025, and Dolly Parton’s Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show has joined the mix. Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge also brings Nashville-style live music.

Skip this one: Older guides still list Gulf World Marine Park. It closed for good in 2025, so don’t plan a visit.

Where to Stay

Your best base depends on the trip you want. Pick your area first, because summer traffic can eat up your day. Then compare hotels and condos.

AreaBest forWhat to expect
Pier Park and central Front Beach RoadFirst-timers and groupsShops and food nearby, but more noise and traffic
Thomas Drive and Grand LagoonBoaters and nature loversClose to St. Andrews, marinas and local restaurants
West End and Laguna BeachFamilies and quiet staysFewer high-rises and a slower pace
Bid-a-WeeBeach house groupsLow-key streets near the pier

Most Gulf-front stays are condos. Check the floor, view and parking before you book. Vacation homes suit bigger groups, especially in quieter residential areas.

Well-known hotel options include Embassy Suites, SpringHill Suites and Holiday Inn Resort. Booking for spring break? In 2026, only guests 21 and older could book vacation rentals, so check the rules first.

Where to Eat

Gulf seafood is the star here. Look for grouper, royal red shrimp and fresh oysters. Save room for key lime pie.

  • Saltwater Grill: Upscale seafood beside a 25,000-gallon aquarium.
  • Firefly: A candlelit spot for a special dinner.
  • Dee’s Hangout: Casual shrimp and fish plates by the lagoon.
  • Sharky’s Beachfront Restaurant: Gulf views and grouper sandwiches.
  • Local Steamer Seafood Market: Steamer pots made for sharing.
  • C Level: Family-run seafood and steaks, plus key lime pie.
  • Andy’s Flour Power Cafe & Bakery: Fresh bread and big breakfasts.

Busy seasons bring long waits. Reserve a table where you can, or eat early.

A Simple 3-Day Itinerary

Three days gives you a solid first taste. Stay four or five if you want slower beach time. Our trip calculator can help you plan the costs.

Day 1: Beach and Pier Park

Start with a slow morning on the sand. Head to Pier Park in the afternoon for shops and the SkyWheel. End with a sunset walk on Russell-Fields Pier.

Day 2: St. Andrews and Shell Island

Reach the state park early and take the ferry across. Spend the morning swimming and hunting for shells. Back on the mainland, finish with seafood near Grand Lagoon.

Day 3: Family Fun or Nature Trails

Got kids? Spend the day at Shipwreck Island, ZooWorld or a mini golf course. Prefer a quiet day? Walk the boardwalks at the 3,000-acre Conservation Park.

Wear closed shoes on those trails. The city warns visitors about snakes and alligators there.

Beach Safety and Local Rules

Rip currents cause most local beach drownings, so learn the flags first. PCB never flies a green flag. Officials want swimmers to stay careful every time they enter the Gulf.

FlagWhat it means
YellowMedium hazard
One redHigh hazard
Double redWater closed, with a $500 fine if you enter

Text PCBFLAGS to 888777 for daily flag alerts. It takes a few seconds and could save your trip. For more tips, read our travel safety guides.

The beach also has a few rules that surprise visitors:

  • Dogs: Only service dogs may use the main beach. Other dogs must stay at the Dog Beach next to Russell-Fields Pier.
  • Glass: Glass containers are banned, even inside coolers.
  • Fires: Open flames and grills are not allowed.
  • Dunes: Stay off the dunes at all times.
  • Holes: Keep them under 2 feet deep and fill them in.
  • Wildlife: Do not touch or bother sea turtles or manatees.

March has extra rules. Alcohol is banned on the sand and in commercial parking lots, and sales stop at 2 a.m. These rules cover residents and visitors alike.

The 2026 season went further. Parts of the beach closed overnight from March 12 to April 30. Unaccompanied minors also faced an 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew.

These rules can change each year. Check the city website before any spring trip.

What to Pack and What It Costs

This is a flip-flop town, so pack light. Start with our vacation packing list, then add your beach basics. Our travel essentials guide covers the core items.

  • Sun protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide hat.
  • Water gear: Two swimsuits, a quick-dry towel and water shoes.
  • Tech: A dry bag for your phone and a power bank.
  • Evening wear: A light layer for cooler nights.

Flying with sunscreen? Follow the liquid limits in our travel-size toiletries guide. You can also buy a full bottle after you land.

Peak season budgets often run about $130 to $300 per day. Prices climb during spring break and summer. Winter and late fall usually cost much less.

Nature is the cheap part of this trip. Public beach access is free, and St. Andrews entry is only $8 per vehicle. Put your savings toward one boat tour.
