How can I estimate how much an Uber ride will cost?
The fastest way is to use this Uber calculator for the USA. Type your pickup and drop off, or just enter how long the ride will take. You get a price range in seconds. No app, no account and no login.
The tool uses the same parts that make up a real fare: a base fare, a charge per mile, a charge per minute and a booking fee. Then it adds surge, airport fees, tolls and tip if you want them.
It also works as a Lyft calculator. Switch the app at the top and compare both side by side.

How does Uber calculate how much to charge?
Every Uber fare follows a simple formula. The rates change by city and ride type, but the parts stay the same.
The Uber fare formula
Fare = (Base fare + Per mile × miles + Per minute × minutes) × Surge + Booking fee + Other fees
If the result is below the minimum fare, you pay the minimum. Surge does not apply to the booking fee.
Base fare
A small flat charge to start the ride. Often $1 to $3 for UberX.
Per mile
The biggest part of most fares. Usually about $0.90 to $1.80 per mile for UberX.
Per minute
You pay for time too. Traffic makes this part grow. Often $0.20 to $0.40 a minute.
Booking fee
A flat fee on every ride. It covers safety and running costs. Often $2 to $3.50.
How much does a 20, 30, 50 or 60 minute Uber cost?
These are typical UberX prices in US cities with no surge and no tip. The low number is a small city. The high number is a big coastal city like New York or San Francisco.
About 6 to 7 miles in city traffic.
About 10 miles. A common airport run.
About 16 to 17 miles across a big city.
About 20 miles. Long rides may add a long trip fee.
Uber price estimate per mile
The per mile rate changes with the city and the ride type. Bigger and nicer cars cost more for each mile.
Your real cost per mile is higher than the rate alone. That is because time, the base fare and the booking fee are added on top. On short rides, the total often works out to $2 to $4 per mile.
| Ride type | Per mile rate | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| UberX Share | Lower than UberX | Solo riders on a budget |
| UberX | $0.90 to $1.80 | Everyday rides, up to 4 |
| Uber Comfort | $1.20 to $2.30 | Newer cars, more legroom |
| UberXL | $1.50 to $2.80 | Groups up to 6, luggage |
| Uber Black | $2.50 to $4.50 | Business and special trips |
How much is a 20 mile or 100 mile Uber ride?
Longer rides use more highway, so they move faster than city rides. Here is what to expect for UberX with no surge.
20 mile Uber ride
$28 to $53About 30 minutes with some highway. A typical trip from the suburbs to downtown or to a big airport.
100 mile Uber trip
$120 to $225+About 2 hours. Uber may add a long trip fee because the driver must drive back. Not every driver will accept it.
A one day car rental or a bus may cost less. Use our trip calculator to compare the gas cost of driving yourself.
Lyft price estimate vs Uber
Uber and Lyft use the same kind of formula. Both charge for distance, time and a booking fee. Both raise prices when lots of people want rides.
In most US cities, the two apps are within a few dollars of each other. The cheaper one changes from hour to hour. That is why it pays to check both.
Switch to Lyft in the calculator above to see a Lyft price estimate for the same trip.
| Uber | Lyft match | Seats |
|---|---|---|
| UberX | Lyft (standard) | Up to 4 |
| Uber Comfort | Extra Comfort | Up to 4 |
| UberXL | Lyft XL | Up to 6 |
| Uber Black | Lux Black | Up to 4 |
