      What is a trip calculator?

A trip calculator works out how much a road trip will cost and how long it will take. You enter where you start and where you are going. The tool finds the route and does the math for you.

Most gas cost calculator trip tools stop at fuel. This one goes further. It adds tolls, other costs, rest breaks, fuel stops and overnight stays. Then it splits the total between everyone in the car.

You get one clear number for your budget. No spreadsheets. No guessing.

      Gas or charging

Fuel cost based on your car's MPG and local price.

      Tolls

      Trip time

Driving time plus breaks, fuel stops and nights.

      Multiple stops

Add up to five stops. See each leg on its own.

      Cost per person

Split the bill fairly between all travelers.

      CO2 output

See the carbon your drive will produce.

How to use the road trip calculator

Five quick steps. Most people finish in under a minute.

      1. Add your routeType your starting point and destination. Tap "Add a stop" for places you want to visit on the way.
      2. Pick your vehicleChoose car, SUV, pickup, van, motorbike or electric. The tool fills in a typical fuel economy.

How the fuel trip calculator works out gas cost

The math is simple. You need three things: distance, fuel economy and fuel price.

      The gas cost formula

Gallons needed = Miles ÷ MPG

Gas cost = Gallons needed × Price per gallon

      Liters needed = Km × L/100 km ÷ 100

For an electric car, swap gallons for kWh and gas price for your charging price per kWh.

Trip calculator with gas and tolls

Tolls can add a lot to a trip. On some highways they cost more than the gas. That is why this tool checks your route for toll roads and compares it with a toll free option.

      Fastest route

Uses the quickest roads, including toll roads.

      • Saves time on long drives.
      • Often uses less fuel on smooth highways.
      • Toll cost is added to your total.

      Avoid tolls route

Skips every toll road it can.

      • No toll charges on the way.
      • Can be longer and slower.
      • May use more gas, so check the total.
      The tool shows both.

After you calculate, you see how much extra time and fuel the toll free route costs. Then you pick the better deal.

About toll pricesToll rates depend on the road, your vehicle and how you pay. Our estimate uses the toll road distance on your route at an average rate. If you know the exact toll, type it in the Tolls box under More options.

Trip calculator time: what is included

Driving time alone is not the full story. Real trips have breaks, fuel stops and nights in a hotel. This trip time calculator adds them all.

      Drive time

Time on the road based on the route and speed limits. No traffic delays.

      Breaks

A 15 minute rest after every 2 hours of driving. This keeps you safe and alert.

      Fuel stops

Based on your tank size. About 15 minutes for gas or 35 minutes for a fast charge.

      Overnight

Based on your driving hours per day. The tool shows how many days the trip will take.

Mileage trip calculator: typical fuel economy

Your car's mileage makes the biggest difference to fuel cost. When you pick a vehicle, the tool uses these average numbers.

For the best result, use your own number. Check your dashboard, your owner's manual or reset your trip meter at the next fill up.

Quick checkFill your tank. Reset the trip meter. Drive normally. At the next fill up, divide miles driven by gallons added. That is your real MPG.

      Trip calculator vs Google Maps

Many people look for a trip calculator on Google Maps or a fuel cost calculator on Google. Google Maps is great for directions and live traffic. But it does not build a full trip budget.

Use Google Maps on the day you drive. Use this trip calculator when you plan and budget.

A real road trip budget example

Four friends plan a 500 mile drive. Their car gets 30 MPG. Gas costs $3.50 a gallon. The route has $15 in tolls.

The car needs about 16.7 gallons of gas. That costs $58.33. Add the tolls and the trip costs $73.33. Split four ways, each person pays $18.33.

At 8 hours of driving a day, they can do it in one day with three short breaks.

Ways to cut your road trip cost

Small habits add up on a long drive. Try these.

      Drive steady

Fast starts and hard braking burn fuel. Use cruise control on the highway.

      Slow down a little

Most cars use more fuel above 55 to 60 mph. A small drop in speed saves gas.

      Check tire pressure

Soft tires make the engine work harder. Check them before you leave.

      Pack light

Extra weight and roof boxes cost you fuel. Take only what you need.

      Fill up off the highway

Gas near exits often costs more. A short detour into town can be cheaper.

      Compare toll routes

Look at the toll free option in your result. Sometimes it is the better deal.

Who uses a trip cost calculator?

It is not only for holidays. Here is how people use it.

      Road trippers

Plan a holiday drive with stops. Know your gas budget before you leave home.

      Friends sharing a ride

Split gas and tolls fairly. Send the share link so everyone sees the same numbers.

      Daily commuters

Check what your drive to work costs. Compare it with the bus or train.

      People moving house

Budget a long drive with a loaded van or trailer. Use the Van option for a lower MPG.

      Work travel

Work out mileage and fuel for expense claims. Print the result for your records.

      EV drivers

See charging cost and how many charging stops you need on a long drive.

Road trip calculator for long drives

Long trips need more than a gas number. You need to know where to sleep, how often to stop and how much each day costs.

Set your driving hours per day under More options. The road trip calculator then shows how many days you need and when you will arrive. Add a stop for each city you want to see. Each leg gets its own distance, time and fuel cost.

This makes it easy to plan hotel nights. Look at the leg table and book a room near the end of each day.

      Driving hours

Most drivers feel best at 6 to 8 hours a day.

      Leg by leg

See cost and time for every part of the trip.

      Arrival time

Set your start time to see when you get there.

      Fuel stops

Know how many times you will fill up on the way.
